Last updated on Sunday, March 4, 2018

(BEDFORD) - Lorri Hamer, executive director of the United Way of South Central Indiana, awarded an Adventure Grant to Jamie Hooten with Green Thumbs Garden.

Hooten, a Lincoln Elementary School fifth-grade teacher and who heads Lincoln Elementary School Green Thumbs was honored with the Dynamite Teacher Award.

Hooten was one of three teachers chosen in the fall of 2017 as a Dynamite teacher, in recognition of steps already taken to teach students about nature.

Amy Spence, a Lincoln third-grade teacher, and Hooten in 2016, began offering a free garden club called Lincoln Green Thumbs.

In 2017, the Lawrence County Soil and Water District honored Hooten as its Teacher of the Year, and Spence was named the district's 2018 Teacher of the Year.

A grant awarded last year allowed for cooking classes to be added to the club's activities.

Hooten, Spencer and Purdue Extension is hosting a Family Nature Day to Lincoln Elementary School on April 14 from 1-3 p.m.

The day will feature six free nature activities for kindergarten through fifth-grade students and their families.

Participants can be from any school and everyone is invited to attend. Pre-registration is available on the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1775534962749942/.

The activities include:

"The whole idea behind the program is to engage families in learning about the health and wellness benefits of nature to get them outside more," Hooten says. "Nature activities grow children's creativity, problem-solving skills, love for and conservation of the environment, responsibility, self-discipline, communication, nutrition and eyesight."
