Fire Destroys Home, Firefighters On Scene Investigating Cause

Last updated on Thursday, March 15, 2018

(BEDFORD) - Bedford Fire Department firefighters remained on the scene this morning battling a house fire in the 1700 block of G Street.

Bedford Fire Department Chief Jon Wagner says firefighters were on the scene until around 3 a.m. and Investigator Brent Allen and a few other firefighters are assisting him this morning to determine the cause of the blaze that destroyed the two-story home.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at 7:11 p.m. Bedford Police Department blocked off the roadway and an AMR ambulance crew assisted at the scene.

"The homeowner or renter attempted to put the fire out with a garden hose," says Chief Wagner. "But the fire got away from them."

An 11-year-old resident told firefighters he though the fire started around an electrical outlet or lamp. But investigators have not confirmed that yet.

Chief Wagner says it is never a good idea to attempt to extinguish a blaze, because if delays firefighters from getting to the scene.

"They should always always call us first," Chief Wagner added.

By the time firefighters arrived the fire was eating away at the older home.

"This was a touch one," he added. "There was so many voids and levels that firefighters couldn't get to."

Upon arriving on scene firefighters battled the blaze from inside. Additional firefighters were called in to assist at the scene and to man the fire stations in case another emergency call came in.

Because of the increased danger firefighters battling the blaze inside the home were pulled out.

"The fire got away from them," Chief added. "The fire would burn in one void and then open up in another. It was tough trying to figure out where all the voids were. Once they got one under control the fire would open up in another. They opened a hole in the roof and found a whole other roof underneath. This fire was a dandy and dangerous. It kept them on their toes trying to hunt it down. But they did a great job and thankfully no one was injured."

Part of the house remains standing.

"The home is a total lose, but the front part is still standing and maybe there are some items there they can save," Chief Wagner says.
