6th Annual Becky's Place Mardi Gras Shelterbration Raises $32,000

Last updated on Tuesday, March 27, 2018

(BEDFORD) - More than 350 guests attended Becky’s Place Mardi Gras Shelterbration that was nearly sold out and raised over $32,000 to benefit the shelter that helps homeless women and children.

The money raised will be used for their general operations throughout the year.

Semple Band entertained the guests while they enjoyed a delicious meal that was provided by Terry's Catering at the Shamrock Center in Bedford. Along with ticket sales and sponsorships, a live auction contributed to the event's profits where guests bid on amazing prizes.

According to the Indiana Institute for Working Families, more than one million Hoosiers live in poverty as they survive on federal poverty level. The 2017 poverty level was $1,702 per month for the average household of three people.

"As a result of your generosity, 100 homeless women and their children find refuge at Becky's Place every year. Becky's Place offers women counseling, case management, budgeting classes, support groups, employment assistance, bus tokens, local resources, transportation, staff advocacy, meals, hygiene items, laundry facility, computer access and 24/7 staff assistance. Residents are required to save 75 percent of their income to put toward permanent housing. Best of all, our aftercare program continues to support program graduates towards stability for as long as they need us," said Corrina Hayes, Shelter Director of Becky's Place.

Becky's Place serves 9 counties and it is the only shelter in Lawrence County for women.

"Just as Becky's Place depends on volunteers throughout the year, the Mardi Gras Shelterbration relies on a community of volunteers to make this event successful. In addition to the planning committee, dozens have volunteered their time to help set up, clean up and serve our guests. Our appreciation goes out to the Mardi Gras volunteers, donors, sponsors and attendees for making this year's event a huge success!" said Hayes.

If you could not attend this year's Mardi Gras Shelterbration, the Semple Band will return again for next year's event March 2, 2019.
