(WILLIAMS) - A Williams man was arrested on a warrant on Thursday and was charged with battery after he took a shovel and hit a man during a domestic dispute on Jan. 14th.

Lawrence County Police arrested 87-year-old Philip Craig on a felony charge of battery resulting in bodily injury. He posed a $755 cash bond shortly after his arrest on Thursday. His initial hearing is scheduled for Feb. 13 at 10:30 a.m.

According to a Lawrence County Superior Court I probable cause affidavit, on Jan. 14, two Lawrence County deputies went to Dogwood Acres Lane after receiving a report of a man that had been hit in the face with a shovel.

When police arrived they spoke to a man who was holding a cloth to his bloody ear.

The man told police he was driving on Dogwood Acres Lane with his wife and son, when he saw a man, later identified as Craig, standing in the middle of the road holding a shovel. The man told police, Craig yelled at him saying he was driving too fast on his road.

Craig then walked up to the vehicle and threatened to break out the vehicle windows.

The man opened a window and that is when Craig him him in the ear with the shovel. The man says he got out of his vehicle and Craig took another swing at him with the shovel but he was able to block it.

The man then attempted to take the shovel away from Craig. The two struggled and both ended up on the snow covered ground after slipping.

The man was able to rip the shovel from Craig's grip and threw it towards a woods, where police found it.

In addition, the man's wife and another witness said the man's story was true.
