(BLOOMINGTON) - An Indianapolis man facing the possibility of life in prison will go on trial next week in connection with a Bloomington break-in and brutal sexual assaults that happened more than three years ago.
22-year-old Vaylen Keishaun Glazebrook is facing charges of attempted murder, seven counts of rape, burglary while armed with a deadly weapon, two counts of armed robbery, three counts of criminal confinement with injury and resisting law enforcement with a deadly weapon.
During a pretrial hearing Monday afternoon, the lawyers in the case discussed with the Judge Marc Kellams the possible exclusion of some evidence and statements made by Glazebrook when police were interrogating him. Judge Kellams said there are more issues to be decided before the trial, so he scheduled hearings for Wednesday and Friday to clear up any unsettled matters.
Glazebrook has been incarcerated at the Monroe County Jail since his arrest on $500,000 bond.
According to police, on November 9, 2014, Glazebrook and Michael Deweese, now 22, broke into an off-campus apartment on East 12th Street, near the IU-Bloomington campus and raped two women inside. A third woman, who was hiding inside the apartment, called 911 to say she feared her roommates were being killed.
One woman said she was was forced to perform oral sex in her bedroom before being taken into another room, according to court documents.
Then, both women told police, they were raped.
A third woman in the apartment locked the door to the room she was in and called 911.
When an officer arrived at around 4:30 a.m., he heard shots fired inside the apartment, Bloomington Police Capt. Joe Qualters says.
Then, the officer saw two men climb out a window and run, Qualters added. The men shot at the officer.
When he shot back, the officer hit one in the arm and one in the leg. Glazebrook was shot in the arm and Deweese was shot in the leg.
According to court documents, Deweese said he was walking by an apartment when he saw someone climb out of a window with a gun. That person shot at him, he said, causing him to run toward Torres.
Glazebrook said he did not remember what happened that morning because he blacked out after drinking at a party. He said he was chased, heard gunshots and fired back.
No officers were injured in the gunfire.
A third defendant in the case, 22-year-old Jesse Benti-Torres, of Danville, is charged with burglary with a deadly weapon and two counts of assisting a criminal when the criminal assisted committed attempted murder. He is accused of driving the two men to the apartment. He however, didn't go inside but waited in the vehicle for the men to return. He is currently out on bond. A pretrial conference is scheduled for Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. in Monroe Circuit Court 2.
Deweese was given 109 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to the crimes in April 2016. He is incarcerated at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility, with a 2096 release date.
