Last updated on Sunday, February 11, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - An elderly woman lost her life and a man was injured after a house fire in the 5600 block of South Handy Road, south of Bloomington, Saturday morning.

Firefighters from Perry-Clear Creek and Van Buren Volunteer Fire Departments were called to the blaze at 11:29 a.m.

When firefighters arrived at the single-story home down a dirt and gravel road driveway they found the home engulfed in flames.

Perry-Clear Creek Fire Chief Dustin Dillard says, firefighters didn't attempt to enter the home because of safety issues.

They were able to knock down the fire quickly.

The injured man, whose name has not been released, was able to escape the blaze, but suffered burns to his face and hands. He was taken by ambulance to IU Health Bloomington Hospital for treatment.

Monroe County Coroner Joani Shields collected the 85-year-old woman's remains around 2 p.m. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning.

Firefighters and investigators from the Indiana State Fire Marshal's office and the Monroe County Fire Investigation Task Force began sifting through the debris around 2:30 p.m. to try to determine a cause of fire.
