Norman Man Arrested After Fleeing From Police, Crashing Into Historical Church

(HELTONVILLE) - A Norman man was arrested after he lead police on a pursuit and crashed into the historic Gilgal Church on Saturday morning.

Lawrence County Police Officer Rob German was patrolling the area of Dunn Bridge and Pleasant Run roads around 7:30 a.m. after a report of a suspicious vehicle in the area.

Officer German spotted the vehicle and determined the driver was possibly impaired.

He attempted to make a traffic stop and the driver took off east on Pleasant Run Road. The pursuit continued east on Gilgal Road at a high-rate of speed.

The driver of the pickup failed to negotiate a northbound curve and ran off the east side of the road striking an AT&T junction box then continued forward directly into Gilgal Church located at 2609 Gilgal Road with the pickup stopping inside the church.

Police arrested 43-year-old Travis Todd on two counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and resisting arrest.

Pleasant Run Volunteer Fire Department firefighters stabilized the more than 100 year-old church.
