Monroe County Clerk's Office Now Charging For Performing Marriage Ceremony

Last updated on Tuesday, February 13, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - Those getting married in the Monroe County Clerk’s Office will now have to pay a fee.

The Heralds Times reports, the clerk's office will now charge a $20 fee for all couples, the same amount Monroe County couples pay for a marriage license. The new fee was approved last week by the county commissioners.

County Attorney Margie Rice says the marriage ceremony fee is to compensate the clerk's office for taking time out of its business day to perform marriage ceremonies which have increased to now workers performing them on a weekly sometimes daily basis.

Ceremonies can be performed in the office, or in a vacant courtroom and are typically quick, and couples are welcome to bring guests or witnesses.

The city clerk's office also performs wedding ceremonies for couples during office hours Monday to Friday. The city provides the service at no cost.
