Meryl Klein Moves On In 44th Annual Lawrence County Spelling Bee

Last updated on Tuesday, February 6, 2018

(BEDFORD) - Last night Meryl Klein, a 5th grader from Shawswick Elementary School, took first place in the 44th Annual Lawrence County Spelling Bee elementary competition.

She went 14 rounds and correctly spelled the word 'curio' for the win.

Klein said that she studied hard the night before the 44th Annual Lawrence County Spelling Bee, but her participation in her school's club, Spell Bowl, really helped her.

Klein is also a participant in Shawswick Elementary's Math Bowl club.

Lydia Orellana, a 4th grader that is home schooled, took 2nd place. Orellana misspelled the word 'amendment' in the last round, allowing Klein the opportunity to win.

Klein and Orellana went back and forth for four rounds. In round 10, Orellana misspelled the word 'quarterback' opening up the first opportunity for Klein to win the competition, but Klein also misspelled her word - 'sparsely'.

Stella Greenwood, a 4th grader from Parkview Intermediate, placed 3rd. She made it to round 9 when she misspelled the word 'prophet'.

There were eleven representatives from Lawrence County schools and home school contestants to compete in the elementary division.

Klein will move on to participate tonight against the Middle School aged contestants. That winner will be the overall Spelling Bee Champion and will receive a $100 cash prize provided by Bedford Federal Savings Bank and a pizza party provided by Marco's Pizza.

The champion will move on to the Ford Motor Company Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 11:00 AM. The Ford Motor Company Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee showcases Kentucky and Southern Indiana's top spellers in a suspenseful competition that leaves only one standing. The top five finishers receive savings bonds from the Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation, while the overall champion gets to ride on the Winner's Float in the Republic Bank Pegasus Parade.
