(BEDFORD) - Jared Stancombe announces his candidacy for State Representative, District 65
Jared, a 31-year old researcher at Indiana University and former analyst with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, has officially announced that he is running for state representative for District 65, which includes the communities of Bedford, Nashville, Williams, Oolitic, Heltonville, and Freetown.
Raised in Heltonville, he graduated with honors in political science from Indiana University in 2009 where he studied international security affairs.
Jared seeks to use his extensive background in public health, which has taken him to refugee camps in Africa and to the slums of India, to address the opioid epidemic in Indiana.
"After working with the recovery community and seeing the lack of leadership, initiative, and results from the Indiana Statehouse in facing the opioid epidemic, I felt the need to step up and lead by example."
Jared hopes to advocate for legislation that will improve access to treatment in Indiana, support community drug take back programs, and reduce over prescription among medical practitioners. Jared also believes that medical marijuana is a viable solution for pain management for chronic pain issues.
"Opioids are meant for the treatment of acute pain. The evidence shows that medical marijuana can treat chronic pain issues. We have truck drivers and construction workers addicted to opioids because their doctors overprescribed them opioids for chronic pain with no follow up. States who have legalized medical marijuana have fewer people addicted to opioids and fewer people fatally overdosing."
Jared is also committed to addressing middle class job growth.
"Jobs are also one of my top priorities. We need more jobs in high-demand industries such as cybersecurity, renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, and biotechnology here in Indiana. Indiana is being left behind. While Indiana has a tax-friendly environment, it is not attracting and retaining the talent necessary to innovate."
Jared is an active member of his community. He is a member of the allocations board for the United Way of South
Central Indiana and the founder of the Lawrence County Forum on the Opioid Epidemic, a grassroots coalition of
over 20 community members facing addiction every day. He is also an alumnus of AmeriCorps, where he served
2,000 national service hours at a middle school in a vulnerable community in Washington, DC. He has also served
in Global Health Corps, a highly selective fellowship program founded by Barbara Bush.
"I just don't see the initiative and leadership coming from our elected officials at the Statehouse. We need elected
officials who understand their community and the immense hardships many Hoosiers face, not just the wishes of
corporate donors. We need someone who will lead by example and be a voice for those who feel completely
disconnected from our political process. We need leadership."
