(BLOOMINGTON) - Kathleen Hall Jamieson, a leading expert on political communication and news coverage of political candidates, campaigns and elections, will present Patten Lectures at Indiana University Bloomington on Feb. 27 and March 1.
Jamieson is the Elizabeth Ware Packard Professor of Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication and the Walter and Leonore Annenberg Director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania.
Both lectures will take place from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in Presidents Hall in Franklin Hall. Topics will include:
Feb. 27 -- "Recognizing and Debunking Political Deception and Viral Deception." Jamieson will define viral deception, explain why it is powerful and problematic, and examine ways to prevent its spread and blunt its influence.
March 1 -- "Communicating Sound Science in a Polarized Age." She will examine language issues that may contribute to misperceptions of science and discuss what scientists and the media can do to more accurately convey findings of scientific research.
Jamieson's research has focused on what people know about politics, how media portray politics and how these processes affect policy. She is the author or co-author of 15 books, including "Packaging the Presidency," "Eloquence in an Electronic Age," "Spiral of Cynicism," "Presidents Creating the Presidency" and "The Obama Victory: How Media, Money and Message Shaped the 2008 Election."
She has published dozens of op-ed pieces in national media outlets, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and CNN. Her work has received awards from the American Political Science Association, the National Communication Association and other organizations. She is co-founder of FactCheck.org and its subsidiary site, SciCheck, and is director of The Constitution Project, which produces films on the Constitution for high school students.

Patten Foundation, endowed by a student of the Indiana University class of 1893, provides generous funds to bring to the Bloomington campus for a week people of extraordinary national and international distinction in the sciences, humanities and arts.
