Girl Scouts To Discover Their Inner Scientist, Computer Scientist, Engineer And Mathematician

Last updated on Friday, February 23, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - Girl Scouts from across central Indiana will learn what Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) is all about at WOW! That’s Engineering! More than 90 Girl Scouts (kindergarten through fifth grade) are registered to attend the event held at Ivy Tech Community College’s Bloomington campus on Saturday, February 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event is sponsored by Cook Medical and hosted by the Society of Women Engineers of Southwest Central Indiana.

Girl Scouts will participate in various hands-on engineering activities, hear from female engineers during a panel discussion, and attend the STEM Expo where they will learn more about careers in these fields.

Last year, in an effort to encourage interest in STEM from an early age, Girl Scouts added 23 new badges ranging from designing robots to coding. Girl Scouts partnered with the Society of Women Engineers, Code.org, and SciStarter to create the curriculum for the badges.

This program was made possible by a Program Development Grant with the Society of Women Engineers through a generous donation from the ExxonMobil Foundation.

We're Girl Scouts.

We're 2.6 million strong--1.8 million girls and 880,000 adults who believe in the power of every G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™ to change the world. Our extraordinary journey began more than 100 years ago with the original G.I.R.L., Juliette Gordon "Daisy" Low. On March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, she organized the very first Girl Scout troop, and every year since; we've honored her vision and legacy, building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. We're the preeminent leadership development organization for girls. And with programs from coast to coast and across the globe, Girl Scouts offers every girl a chance to practice a lifetime of leadership, adventure, and success.
