Celebrate Sandhill Cranes Saturday At Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge

Last updated on Thursday, February 8, 2018

(SEYMOUR) - A “Celebration of Cranes” event will be Saturday at Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge, 12985 U.S. 50 East, Seymour.

Mid-February usually is a big migration time for sandhill cranes through Jackson County, and there should be many thousands of birds in the area, according to a news release from the refuge.

Everyone who enjoys birds is invited to join refuge staff and volunteers for an afternoon of learning about the visiting "Gray Ghosts."

During the event, there will be free bird crafts for children from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the visitor center.

Self-guided tour information will be available for those who would like to view cranes on their own.

Two guided car caravan-type crane tours will be offered -- one at 10 a.m. and the other at 2 p.m. Both tours will leave from the visitor center, and no advance registration is needed.

A program about sandhill cranes will be at 1 p.m. at the visitor center.
