(BLOOMINGTON) - A "Lifetime Community" is defined as a place that promotes physical, social, mental and economic well being for persons of all abilities, across the lifespan.

The Lifetime Community concept emerged from research carried out by the Center on Aging and Community at Indiana University in Bloomington over the past several years, funded by the Grantmakers in Aging organization. The work has received international attention in multiple publications and events.

The City of Bloomington 2040 Comprehensive Master Plan calls for the use of the Lifetime Community concept as a framework for redevelopment of areas like the existing 24-acre site of the IU Health Bloomington Hospital, Switchyard Park, and other locations.

In order to provide residents with background on the concept of a Lifetime Community, and in preparation for upcoming local discussions about the Comprehensive Master Plan and related redevelopment opportunities, the City's Commission on Aging is holding a free public workshop at City Hall (401 N. Morton) in Council Chambers on Friday, March 9. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the workshop is from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Guest speakers include Zach Benedict, a Fort Wayne architect who has helped pioneer the Lifetime Community concept nationally, and Phil Stafford, recently retired Director of the former Indiana University Center on Aging and Community and a member of the Bloomington Commission on Aging.

For more information about the workshop, contact Commission on Aging liaison, Sue Owens, at 812-349-3468 or
