44th Annual Lawrence County Spelling Bee

(BEDFORD) - The 44th Annual Lawrence County Spelling Bee hosted by 1340 AM WBIW will be Monday Feb. 5th and 6th at the Bedford Middle School Schafer Auditorium at 4:30 p.m. each day.

Contestants from 16 schools will compete for the title of champion. The event is free to the public to attend.

Elementary champions, grades 4-5, will begin competing Monday, February 5, in hopes to win the title and an opportunity to take on the middle school champions, grades 6-8 on Tuesday, February 6.

WBIW offers options for you to view or listen to the Spelling Bee if you can't attend. You will be able to view the bee on WBIW Facebook Live at 4:30 p.m. You may also listen to the stream online at & on the airwaves at 1340 AM WBIW both days at 6:30 p.m.

All participants receive a 1340 AM WBIW Spelling Bee t-shirt and a certificate. The top three will also receive a bee bobble-head trophy. The overall Spelling Bee Champion will receive a $100 cash prize provided by Bedford Federal Savings Bank.

The overall Spelling Bee Champion will receive a $100 CASH PRIZE provided by Bedford Federal Savings Bank and a pizza party provided by Marcos Pizza that will be held at the champion's school.

The following schools will participate in the competition:

  • Bedford Middle School
  • Oolitic Middle School
  • Shawswick Middle School
  • Parkview Intermediate
  • Mitchell Junior High
  • Home School students from both Elementary and Middle School age groups
  • Dollens Elementary
  • Springville Elementary
  • Burris Elementary
  • Stalker Elementary
  • Heltonville Elementary
  • Hatfield Elementary
  • Lincoln Elementary
  • Needmore Elementary
  • Fayetteville Elementary
  • St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School
  • Shawswick Elementary

The champion will move on to the Ford Motor Company Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at
11:00 AM. The Ford Motor Company Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee showcases Kentucky and Southern Indiana's top spellers in a suspenseful competition that leaves only one standing. The top five finishers receive savings bonds from the Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation, while the overall champion gets to ride on the Winner's Float in the Republic Bank Pegasus Parade.

1340 AM WBIW has proudly been the Lawrence County Spelling Bee coordinator and host for 44 years.
