(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana Parole Board has rejected parole for a Bloomington man who was convicted in a woman’s 1986 killing and dismemberment.
The five-member board heard from 62-year-old Robert E. Lee on Wednesday via a video feed from the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City before voting to deny his request for release.
Lee was convicted of murder in 1987 and sentenced to 60 years in the killing and dismemberment of 31-year-old Ellen Marks, a reclusive former Indiana University graduate student who lived in a plywood and cardboard shack. Her dismembered body was found in an overgrown lot at 11th and Summit street on the city's westside.
Lee was sentenced in 1987 to 60 years in prison after a jury convicted him of murder. He was granted parole in 2012 after serving 25 years.
Lee was supposed to live in Bloomington after he was released from prison but public outcry forced Lee to move from Bloomington to North Vernon and Indianapolis.
His parole was revoked two months after his release after he violated the terms of his parole by riding a short distance with a woman in a car in South Bend. Lee told authorities he was assisting a person with directions. Parole officials say Lee was hitchhiking.
