(MITCHELL) - Mitchell Police Officer Clay Blackburn received the Life Saving Award from the American Police Hall of Fame for his efforts in saving a man’s life when responding to a shooting on Mill Creek Road in December 2016.
Blackburn is the first MPD officer to receive this specific award.
Police were called to the home in the 1080 block of Mill Creek Road after a report of a domestic fight and shooting.
When police arrived they found that a 36-year-old woman had been beaten and suffered a busted lip, swelling to her eye and complained of side pain. A 16-year-old armed with a .22-caliber rifle attempted to stop 41-year-old Daniel McNulty from hurting his mother.
McNulty suffered at least two gunshot wounds. One to the chest and another to his ear area.
Once officers arrived on the scene, they found McNulty on the floor bleeding. Blackburn attended to McNulty by applying pressure to the wound until paramedics arrived.
McNulty was airlifted to the University of Louisville after the incident and has recovered from his injuries.
Also shot was a 15-year-old male who lived in the home who attempted to stop the shooting. He suffered a gunshot wound to the hand when he attempted to grab the rifle from the other teen.
