(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Bicentennial Commission is looking for designs for a sculpture to honor American Naval Capt. James Lawrence.
Lawrence County was formed in 1818 from land given by Orange County. The first trace of settlement in Lawrence County was near Leesville, however, Bono was the first settlement in the county.
It was named for Capt. Lawrence, who is best known for his last words, or "dying command," "Don't give up the ship!" -- still a popular naval battle cry -- and inspired Oliver Hazard Perry's personal battle flag, adopted to commemorate his dead friend.
Designs for the sculpture are due to the Bicentennial Commission, 405 I Street, by March 2, according to a press release from the commission. The figure will be done by a professional carver and will be placed in the courthouse plaza. The winning designer will receive $500.
The design should support the bicentennial theme "Honoring our past. Charting our future," and Capt. Lawrence should be a part of the design.
The sculpture will be carved from a 5-by-5 foot limestone block, and may be between 10 and 15 feet tall. The creator of the design will collaborate with the carver during the carving process.
The sculpture is planned to be unveiled Sept. 15 and dedicated at the end of the Lawrence County torch relay.
