(PAOLI) - Recently Indiana University Health Paoli Hospital announced plans to discontinue baby delivery services, but now hospital leaders have reversed their decision.

In a statement released Friday by IU Health, the hospital's president, Larry Bailey, said the decision was made after many meaningful conversations over the past week between IU Health leadership, community leaders, healthcare providers and government officials about the unique characteristics and needs of the Orange County population.

IU Health and community partners will now explore funding sources "for the benefit of serving the vulnerable population who seek care in Orange County."

Some of the reasons for the reversal decision were:

  • Disproportionate amount of families living in poverty in the Paoli area;
  • An Amish population that may have difficulty traveling outside the county;
  • A strong desire among IU Health leaders and multiple stakeholders to work together toward a solution for best serving the healthcare needs of local families.
