(MONROE CO.) - The Indiana Department of Transportation met with contractor representatives, consulting engineers and Monroe County officials at INDOT Seymour District offices Jan. 5th to discuss plans for rebuilding a mile-long segment of Hunters Creek Road in Polk Township in southeast Monroe County.

Construction is expected to begin in early April.

E & B Paving of Bloomington is the prime contractor for this $1.9 million Local Public Agency (LPA) project sponsored by Monroe County. It is charged with reconstructing the narrow gravel road from 2.85 miles east of State Road 446 to just south of Tower Ridge Road adjacent to the Hoosier National Forest.

Plans call for a stabilized subbase to be covered with six inches of compacted aggregate base topped with two lifts of asphalt pavement. Three concrete culverts and a number of drainage pipes will be put in place to carry Hunters Creek tributaries. The winding road's 10-MPH curves will be moderated through vertical and horizontal realignment to achieve a 35-MPH design speed.

When completed, this segment of Hunters Creek Road will provide motorists safer travel conditions on 10-foot paved lanes - one in each direction - with 2-foot shoulders.

Construction will require closing the road for up to 150 days. Motorists can detour around the site via S.R. 446 and Tower Ridge Road.

Hunters Creek Road has a traffic count of 300 vehicles per day.

As LPA sponsor, Monroe County will contribute 20 percent of project costs; the Federal Highway Administration will fund 80 percent.

INDOT administers FHWA funding and has responsibility for overseeing the project to assure compliance with federal standards. American Structurepoint of Indianapolis is responsible for the project plans and for day-to-day onsite supervision.
