(BEDFORD) - A program titled Changing Face of Eastern Forests will be presented on Tuesday, January 23, at 6 at Wilson Park Shelter House.

The program is the sixth program in the Bedford Park Outdoor Series. Teena Ligman will discuss how forests in the eastern United States have changed since European settlement.

This free program at the historic Wilson Park Shelter House will start with a glimpse of what our historic forests looked like. Over time, settlement took its toll, Ligman will explain how some of our most magnificent native tree species have been all but lost as pathogens, insects and diseases have inadvertently been brought in from other countries. Yet, in virtually every case researchers are working to save these species by hybridizing, looking for resistant strains, and seed banks. Find out what's being done to bring back our American tree species.

This program gives you an idea of how resilient and adaptable our natural ecosystems are. Ligman hopes that the program will resonate with those interested in our natural world.

The shelter house is heated, but watch the Bedford Park Department website or Facebook page if the weather is bad to check for cancellation. Please RSVP for the program at 812-275-5692 so there are enough handouts and chairs set up.

Mark your calendar for Tuesday, February 27, when the Outdoor Program Series will feature a program on Pollinators and Wildflowers, given by District Conservationist Evan Smith.
