(HURON) - Due to a prediction of Mother Nature raining down ice and snow on the area Friday and Saturday, Sheriff Mike Branham is postponing the Coffee with a Cop event at the Huron Volunteer Fire Department scheduled for Saturday.

"We are going to postpone the event to a date to be announced in late February or early March," Sheriff Branham says. "We don't want to risk anyone's safety unnecessarily."

In addition, Huron firefighters were going to move the department's equipment and vehicles out of their fire barn.

"I don't want to risk them needing to scrape ice from their trucks to respond to an emergency," Sheriff Branham added.

The next Coffee with a Cop events are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Indian Creek Volunteer Fire Department on State Road 158 and Saturday, Jan. 27 at Farmers Market on U.S. 50 East.

The events will begin at 8 a.m. and last about an hour. There is no cost to attend and the coffee and donuts are free.

The goal of Coffee with a Cop is to build community relations. Those attending can ask questions and voice concerns while officers will be asking questions to get community feedback.

Sheriff Branham implemented Coffee with a Cop in a partnership with Indiana University in the Sustainable Hoosier Communities program funded by a planning grant from the Lilly Endowment.

"Sustaining Hoosier Communities is a partnership between Lawrence County and Indiana University that will help our community with various projects that we have identified," Sheriff Branham added. "One project we would like to complete focuses on better understanding the needs in Lawrence County regarding mental health and addictions. We need your help for this project to be successful!"

The public is invited to complete the survey, which can be found online at

"Paper copies of the survey will be made available. The survey will take you about 5 minutes to complete and your responses are completely anonymous," he added. "We will never be able to attach your name with your responses."

A survey will be presented to those that attend.
