(BLOOMINGTON) - The recent cold snap has brought many challenges to homeowners across Indiana. Water pipes are susceptible to freezing and the City of Bloomington Utilities has six crews working on hundreds of water meters at homes and businesses in the area.

You can help keep the water flowing by letting a faucet drip during frigid weather. A slight increase in your water bill may be better than the costly task of replacing frozen meters, water pipes, or property damage.

Some other tips on preventing frozen pipes:

  • Heat all rooms with plumbing fixtures, particularly those with plumbing on outside walls.
  • Open cabinets under sinks to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.
  • Insulate pipes and faucets in unheated areas.
  • Disconnect any outdoor hoses and place insulation caps on hose bibs.
  • Close foundation or exterior vents around the house during the cold months.
  • Seal off access doors, air vents, and cracks (avoid plugging air vents that your furnace or water heater need for safe operation).
  • Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.

If you will be going away during cold weather, take necessary precautions to prevent frozen pipes in your absence.

Know the location of your master water shutoff valve. If a pipe bursts you can turn off the water and prevent some damage to your home.

If you have any questions or concerns related to frozen meters or water main breaks, please call the City's 24/7 dispatcher at (812) 339-1444.
