(CAMPBELLSBURG) - A gunshot wound to the neck and torso was ruled the cause of death of Rex "Rexie" Pruett of Campbellsburg, who was accidentally shot by his sister last week.

Pruett, 14, died after the shooting on Jan. 21. at his home at East County Road 800 North in Campbellsburg. He is the son of Rex Pruett and Jessica Hubbard.

According to an Indiana State Police report, Rex Sr. and his two children were planning to go outside and do some target practice when the father received a phone call. While he was on the phone, Rexie's sister, who is in ninth grade, unintentionally shot Rexie with a .22-caliber handgun.

Rex put his son in his vehicle and drove to St. Vincent Salem Hospital where Rexie died from his injury.

Washington County Coroner Peggy Schell says the death remains under investigation and she is not sure how the pathologist will rule the death, but cause of death is a gunshot wound to the neck and torso. A final report will not be available for 10 to 14 days.

Rexie's funeral has been paid for thanks to a generous donor.

Pruett is currently in between jobs. Friends have set up fund drives to assist with the related medical expenses and to purchase a headstone for the child. A Facebook fundraiser sponsored by Jasen Harkness titled "For The Pruett Family."
