Last updated on Wednesday, January 24, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington woman is facing charges of child abuse after police say she held her hand over her 2-year-old son’s mouth for more than 45 minutes, making it difficult for him to breathe.

Monroe County Police arrested 22-year-old Makayla Carpenter of Bloomington on charges of battery resulting in bodily injury person under 14 and strangulation.

Police say there is video evidence to shows Carpenter slapping the child, cussing, and standing over him with her hands on the toddler.

Carpenter was arrested after a family member contacted the Monroe County Sheriff's Department.

When confronted by police, Carpenter admitted to slapping the toddler and placing her hand over his mouth and admitted that she knew the child was having a hard time breathing.

She told the deputy she "felt like a monster."

The Indiana Department of Child Services has launched an investigation.

Carpenter is scheduled for a pretrial conference on February 22.
