Black History Month Essay Contest Deadline Extended

(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington’s Black History Month Planning Committee has extended the deadline for the 2018 Black History Month Essay Contest to Wednesday, January 24.

This year's theme, From Protest to Progress, encourages discussions about the ways that African-Americans, past and present, have unmasked the movement by utilizing speeches, writings, songs, religious beliefs, the law, politics, and much more.

To be eligible, students must reside in the city of Bloomington or be enrolled in an elementary, middle, or high school in the city. Home-educated students are eligible to participate.

Essays must focus on a topic from the designated subject list. For a complete list of the contest guidelines, subjects, and information, please visit bloomington.in.gov/inclusion/black-history-month or contact the Community and Family Resources Department at 812-349-3430.

First, second and third place prizes will be awarded in each of three categories: Elementary (grades 4-6), Middle (grades 7-8) and High School (grades 9-12). First place winners will receive a 16GB iPad, second place winners will receive a $100 cash award, and third place winners will receive a $75 cash award. All winners will be honored at a reception on February 8, 2018 as a part of the City's Black History Month celebration.

The City of Bloomington Black History Month Essay Contest is sponsored by Indiana University Credit Union, Prince Hall Mason's Stone City Lodge #54 and Order of the Eastern Star, South Star #50.
