Woman Arrested after Using Deceased Mothers Credit Card

Last updated on Friday, December 1, 2017

(LYONS) - Greene County Police arrested a woman on charges of fraud and theft after she used her deceased mother’s credit card.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Vonda Smith used the card to pay for more than $1,400 in charges at Powers Orthodontics of Lyons.

The investigation began on Oct. 5 when the Greene County Sheriff's Department was contacted by Powers Orthodontics for a fraud complaint. An employee reported that a client used a credit card to pay for a bill that was issued in a different name.

Obituary records show that Olive Kristler, Smith's mother, passed away on June 26, 2010.

In November an outside fraud investigation firm stated Vonda Smith was not authorized to use the account in the name of Olive Kristler that was still open and active.

The investigation is ongoing.

Additional fraud and theft charges are possible.
