Suspect In Sexual Assault Case Jumps From IU Health Hospital Parking Garage

Last updated on Tuesday, December 26, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington man wanted by police for a sexual assault jumped to his death Friday morning from the top floor of the IU Health Hospital parking garage.

Police say 54-year-old Craig Wade was accused of sexually assaulting his 20-year-old female neighbor at their northside apartment complex. The woman reported the crime on Thursday just after 8 p.m.

The woman told police that Wade had asked her to come to his apartment because he wanted to talk. The woman says once in the apartment, Wade slapped her and when she tried to leave, Wade grabbed her and pulled her onto a bed and forcibly removed her clothes and raped her.

After he had finished, Wade told the woman to leave. She went back to her own apartment. A half-hour later, Wade attempted to force his way into her apartment. She told him that she had called the police, and he fled.

The woman was then taken to the hospital for a sexual assault examination.

Police were notified that Wade jumped after a person inside the parking garage alerted hospital security when they heard him fall and hit the ground on the east side of the garage.

Security then called police and emergency crews at 8:06 a.m. Friday. Emergency crews says Wade was dead when they arrived.

When police arrived at the scene they realized Wade was their suspect in the sexual assault case.

No foul play is suspected in Wade's death. Police say Wade jumped from the garage on his own.

Wade was not a hospital patient prior to jumping.
