Restoration Leads To Unexpected Discovery

Last updated on Thursday, December 21, 2017

(SHOALS) - Restoration of the bell tower on the 1876 former Martin County Courthouse in Shoals - now reused as the county museum - led to an unexpected bonus when workers discovered seven long-forgotten bags of documents stored in the tower.

The documents include marriage records and probate documents dating back to the 1870s.

The tower is being rebuilt to remedy an 8" lean. Interior painting, masonry repair, and other improvements are also slated at the National Register-listed building.

Track the progress of the work on the Historical Society's Facebook page.
