(BEDFORD) - Paige Hobson, a graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School, is the 2017 recipient of the Indiana Hoosier Chapter Soil and Water Conservation Society Scholarship.

As the recipient, Hobson received a $1,000 scholarship.

The scholarship is intended to encourage qualified students to increase their interest in conservation, to obtain technical competence in some area of conservation and to pursue a career in a conservation-related discipline.

An applicant must have successfully completed at least two years of study in an Indiana accredited college by August 2017 and must have recorded a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. An applicant also was required to be working toward a bachelor's degree.

Scholarship applicants will be enrolled in such major courses of study as agronomy, biology, soil science, wildlife management, forestry, geography, and environmental management. Other courses of study related to conservation may also qualify. Previous recipients are not eligible for a second Hoosier Chapter Scholarship.

Hobson, during the summer of 2016, was a student intern in the Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation Service office. After serving her internship, Hobson returned to Purdue University to continue studying agronomy. In the summer of 2017, Hobson was selected as a student trainee with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service for the summer. She was a 10-year 4-H member and was a four-year member of the BNL chapter of FFA.
