Last updated on Tuesday, December 26, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - High praise, cheers and a prestigious award were bestowed Wednesday on Debra Wellman, director of clinical operations at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. The long-time employee was given the Roland E. “Bud” Kohr Outstanding Leadership Award. She joins a prestigious list of leaders who have previously earned the distinction.

Jon Barada, president of the Bloomington Hospital Foundation, presented the award which honors the late Bud Kohr, former president and CEO of Bloomington Hospital. The honor, which comes with a $2,500 pre-tax cash award, continues to be funded by Bud's wife, Jan, and honors an outstanding member of the IU Health Bloomington Hospital leadership group who exhibits flexibility, courage, integrity and respect, among other leadership qualities.

The nomination for Wellman paid tribute to her exceptional work ethic, saying she is continuously focused on providing the best patient care and leads others with strength, She always cheers the loudest for others and is well-respected by all nurses, the nomination continued, saying she is warm, caring and has a twinkle in her eye. Among her many achievements, she was praised for her leadership around the Daisy Award program which pays tribute to nurses, and she is said to often be seen helping with hands-on patient care.

Wellman accepted the award with humility.

"As most of you know, I'm not one who showboats. I have an amazing team of people that I've worked with over the years, making me a better person and helping me grow and develop, and you've helped us to continue to focus on the patient, which is why we exist. I'm honored by this because I worked under Bud's guidance and loved his leadership. I realize for those of us in direct care - whether cleaning rooms, taking caring of patients, or running the C-Suite - we all must be here for the same reason, to take care of our community, make sure they are safe, and make sure the outcomes of the patients are good."
