(BLOOMINGTON) - Select first-time moms in five counties will be eligible for assistance from IU Health Bloomington
Hospital to ensure a healthy start for their newborn infants.

A new Nurse-Family Partnership program - sponsored
by a grant from the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) - will provide nurses to first-time mothers, at 28
weeks gestation or before, and who are WIC or Medicaid-eligible.

These nurses will meet each mom in her home and help her through her pregnancy and up to the child's second birthday.

The Nurse-Family Partnership program is part of IU Health's goal of reducing infant mortality. Indiana ranks 43rd
out of the 50 states for infant mortality (2016).

The program will begin in January 2018 and moms can start enrolling in the end of February. The Nurse-Family Partnership will support clients in Monroe, Lawrence, Orange, Green, and Owen.

Nurse-Family Partnership mission: To improve pregnancy outcomes by helping women engage in good preventive health practices, to improve child health and development by helping parents provide responsible and competent care for their children, and to improve the economic self-sufficiency of the family.

To be eligible, women must be:

  • First-time moms
  • 28 weeks gestation or before
  • WIC or Medicaid-eligible
  • Residing in one of the five counties serviced by the program - Monroe, Lawrence, Orange, Green, or
  • Owen

The Nurse-Family Partnership is completely voluntary and free for mothers. Moms can enroll without a referral. For information about the program call (812) 353- 3244.
