(BLOOMINGTON) - Centerstone, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit providers of behavioral healthcare, has received two grants to bolster its addictions treatment programs in South-Central Indiana.
The Centerstone Opioid Crisis Response Team will be offered in Bartholomew, Brown, Decatur, Jennings, Lawrence, Monroe, and Morgan Counties. The Peers & Emergency Department program will be implemented at Indiana University Bloomington Hospital and Columbus Regional Hospital.
The crisis response grant allows Centerstone to establish 24/7 opioid response interventions through crisis response teams in an effort to mitigate instances of opioid overdose. The project will leverage partnerships with emergency responders, law enforcement, and other area organizations and agencies to provide evidence-based and best practice-informed crisis services including assessment, brief negotiation intervention, and referral to a comprehensive array of treatment services, resources, and supports.
"Our crisis response intervention teams will work with emergency responders and other organizations to enhance services available to people with opioid use disorder," said Linda Grove-Paul, Vice President of Adult and Family Services at Centerstone Indiana. "Combatting the growing opioid epidemic requires the cooperation of many agencies and organizations. These teams are just one example of how community partners can collaborate to address the needs of those across our region struggling with substance use."
"The Peers & Emergency Department grant will allow Centerstone to better partner and collaborate with IU Health Bloomington Emergency Department and other organizations to provide more robust crisis services, assessments, and referrals for addictions treatment in our county and surrounding counties," said Jason S. Crouch, Director, Emergency Services, IU Health Bloomington Hospital. "The IU Health Bloomington Emergency Department is encouraged and supportive of Centerstone in their initiative, and we look forward to having this service and partnership in our community."
As part of the Peers & Emergency Department grant, Centerstone will strengthen its existing partnerships with Columbus Regional Hospital and IU Health Bloomington Hospital by providing recovery coaches in the hospitals' emergency rooms.
"Our area has been brutally hit by the opioid epidemic and we see numerous patients with opioid use disorders on a daily basis. The Peers & Emergency Department grant allows us to work with Centerstone to implement a new approach in helping patients with opioid use disorders, as our ED providers can now help initiate evaluations, counseling, and other treatments," said Dr. Kevin Terrell, Emergency Physician and Physician Lead for Community Programs at Columbus Regional Hospital. "The resources provided allow our emergency department providers to have experts from Centerstone we can turn to at any time of the day, and we look forward to expanding this partnership."
"Centerstone has partnered with Columbus Regional and IU Health Bloomington for the past year to offer follow-up services for individuals seen in the emergency room after an opioid overdose," said Grove-Paul. "Our positive relationship in working with the hospitals and our experience with community-based services will help to effectively integrate peer recovery coaches into hospital care teams. We are excited to expand these partnerships and better serve individuals and families in South-Central Indiana."
