Winenger Named New COO For IU Health Southern Indiana Physicians

(BLOOMINGTON) - John Winenger, MBA, FACHE, has been chosen to succeed long-time Chief Operating Officer Sandy DeWeese at IU Health Southern Indiana Physicians (SIP). Winenger’s first day with the physician group was Oct. 9. DeWeese’s retirement was effective Oct. 31.

Winenger brings a rich history of experience in both outpatient ambulatory services development and acute care operations to the position. He spent over 10 years working in southern Indiana assisting St Vincent in development of a sustainable rural health strategy in partnership with their medical staff in the North Vernon, Salem and Bedford markets. His background includes practice development initiatives, growth, and creating sustainable operational plans in partnership with medical staff. 

More recently Winenger worked in Oncology at Community Health Network in Indianapolis developing its MD Anderson affiliated program and constructing its new infusion center in Castleton. He also recently worked in Tacoma, Wash. with Catholic Health Initiatives as a consultant restructuring its care management systems across seven hospitals. His exposure to managed care, population health, integrated delivery systems, and health care system operations will serve as a foundation for the next chapter of SIP.

The new COO earned his undergraduate degree from Indiana University, majoring in Public Healthcare Administration. He later earned an MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University where he also serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Health Services Administration program. His interests include golf, reading, volunteer work and networking. He and his wife Lois will be relocating to Bloomington in the near future. In his new role, Winenger oversees the multi-specialty physician group of more than 300 providers plus staff in 29 specialties at 85 locations served by IU Health in the South Central Region.
