(UNDATED) - Plan to cook and enjoy a nutritious meal with family for National Dine In Day on December 3, 2017.

The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) initiative has brought over 300,000 people together since 2014.

This year the topic is food selection and planning meals ahead of time.

"We're calling it National Dine in Day... It focuses on meal planning meal selection and preparing foods but also how you set a table and how you converse around a table," said Shawswick Middle School Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher, Angie Timan.

"It used to just be mom or dad to be the only one cooking. We're trying to involve young people helping their family in the kitchen so they're learning the skills needed so when they become adults themselves," Tieman continued.

AAFCS honors Founder Ellen Swallow Richards by celebrating National Dine In Day on her birthday, December 3rd.

Ellen Swallow Richards was a Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher. "She was trying to get people to...think about planning ahead, planning good meals and being able to sit down with your family unplugged. You know, put off the computers, get off your phones and just sit down and be with each other with a nice relaxed atmosphere," said Timan.

There will be a couple chances to learn more about meal selection and planning ahead in the coming weeks.

On December 1st there will be a Dine In Day Open House to give ideas about easy healthy meals such as meals-in-a-mug or crock pot recipes. There will also be a recipe exchange and an opportunity for kids to learn how to set tables. The event will be held at the Lawrence County Museum of History from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on December 1st.

Timan and others will also be at the Boys and Girls Club teaching students to cook easy meals after school and in the classroom.
