IU Athletics Earns Highest Graduation Success Rate Score In History

Last updated on Friday, November 10, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - An NCAA study released Wednesday shows Indiana University’s students who participate in intercollegiate athletics are graduating at their highest rate ever.

IU Athletics reports, the NCAA announced that IU scored a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 90.6 percent, the school's best total since the report was first introduced 13 years ago. The GSR data is based on a six-year time period from the student's initial college enrollment.

This marks not only IU's best GSR score since the NCAA began releasing it in 2005, but also represents a fairly amazing increase to 90.6 percent in 2016 from 74.4 percent in 2011.

"This record-setting Graduation Success Rate is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students," said Indiana University Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass. "Reaching our highest academic potential and earning Indiana University degrees is one of our main priorities, and this score reflects the commitment of our students, as well as the coaches and staff who support them, to that priority. We could not be prouder of our continued improvement and record-setting score."

In addition to the overall success, individual programs stood out. Thirteen programs were perfect. The thirteen IU programs to earn perfect 100 percent Graduation Success Rate scores for 2016 were Men's Basketball, Men's Golf, Men's Soccer, Men's Swimming and Diving, Men's Track and Field, Field Hockey, Softball, Women's Rowing, Women's Golf, Women's Soccer, Women's Swimming and Diving, and Women's Track and Field.

The GSR report comes on the heels of the NCAA's May release of the most recent Academic Progress Rate (APR), which also highlighted the academic successes of IU's student-athletes. In that report, ten IU programs earned a perfect 1,000 APR score for the 2015-16 academic year, and all 24 programs easily exceeded the NCAA required four-year standards for participation in NCAA Championship competitions.

The APR is a real-time measure of eligibility and retention of student-athletes competing in Division I sports. The ten IU programs to earn perfect APR scores for 2015-16 were Field Hockey, Men's Cross Country, Men's Golf, Men's Tennis, Softball, Women's Cross Country, Women's Soccer, Women's Tennis, Women's Track and Field and Wrestling.
