Former Southwest School Corp. Treasurer Arrested After Using School Corporation Credit Card

(SULLIVAN) - Indiana State Police have arrested the former treasurer of the Southwest School Corporation in Sullivan County, Amy Kinnett, on a Level 6 felony count of official misconduct, a level 6.

Kinnett surrendered to Indiana State Police around 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Kinnett, who has been treasurer for more than 8 years, was placed on official administrative leave on May 19th due to concerns identified by the Southwest School Corporation administration.

The ISP investigation began on August 18th when ISP Special Investigations Det. Sergeant Troy Stanton met with representatives from a private forensic audit unit, hired by the school corporation to review financial records, after allegations of possible wrongdoing by Kinnett.

Police say Kinnett used the school corporation's credit card between 2015 - 2017, for personal use, including purchases for bridal merchandise, hotel stays, groceries, purchasing a telephone and paying telephone bills, and clothing items - totaling more than $6,000.

Kinnett is also accused of stealing cash out of various envelopes in the custody of the treasurer's office totaling more than $1,000 and cashing several checks payable to the school corporation and not depositing those funds within one business day of receipt, as required by Indiana law.

During this investigation, police say Kinnett began making substantial restitution to the school corporation.

The case was investigated by ISP Special Investigations Detective Sergeant Troy Stanton. Assisting were Senior Prosecutor David Thomas (Appointed as Special Prosecutor).
