National Weather Service Confirms Tornado Hit Springville

(SPRINGVILLE) - Today, the National Weather Service sent survey teams to Lawrence County to assess damages following Sunday's storms. .

The survey team determined that a tornado did, in fact, hit Lawrence County in the area of Springville Judah Road and Gas Line Road

They have not yet determined an EF scale rating for the tornado.

Earlier:

Volunteer Fire Department first responders, emergency management officials, Lawrence County police and the Red Cross were on the scene in the Springville area assessing damage from Sunday storms.

Emergency officials have determined that five homes were destroyed, while several others have varying amounts of damage.

Damage to homes, downed trees, over-turned mobile homes, and other various property damages and utility poles down were widespread in Perry Township Sunday.

The steeple at Oak Grove Pentecostal Church was tore off by strong winds.

The National Weather Service has not officially confirmed if a tornado touched down, but Sheriff Mike Branham says he saw pictured of the funnel cloud that residents snapped photos of.

A tornado warning was issued for northern Lawrence County and southern Monroe County around 1:45 p.m. Sunday. Another warning was issued around 7 p.m.

Sheriff Branham says damages were from Popcorn Road, north of Springville, in a straight line east to Hayes Road.

Sheriff Branham says no one was injured during the storms.

A command station was set up at Springville Elementary School with the Red Cross offering assistance to those displaced by the storm.
