(NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY CRANE) - At approximately 3 a.m., Saturday two individuals attempted to bypass the Bedford Gate, crashing through the fence before being stopped by a barricade.
One of the suspects, Clint Ferguson, is believed to have fled the vehicle on foot and may be armed.
The other suspect was arrested.
Jeff Nagan, Public Affairs Officer at Naval Support Activity Crane, says police did find a gun inside the vehicle.
According to the Lawrence County police log the incident began with a traffic stop at State Road 37 and State Road 58 West. at 2:38 a.m. after an officer attempted to stop the vehicle for speeding. The pursuit continued on state Road 458 with the vehicle going all over the roadway. The officer reported the driver was refusing to stop.
The vehicle then passed the New Union Church at 2:40 a.m.
At 2:46 a.m. the pursuit continued on State Road 158 and was approaching Craig Mill Road.
Martin County police reported Loogootee police and Indiana State Police were staging at the county line.
At 2:49 a.m. the vehicle went crashed at the Crane Gate.
At 2:50 a.m. one suspect was in custody and a second male fled the area on foot into the woods and could possibly be armed with a gun.
Canine units were used to track the second suspect.
At 3:07 a.m. Martin County units were on the scene and checking the cemetery area.
The driver was detained by Federal officers from Crane Naval Base.
Naval Support Activity Crane police are working closely with local and state police and were looking for the second suspect.
The Bloomington and Bedford gates were close and Crane authorities urged personnel currently on base, and residents to shelter-in-place. Additionally, all hunting activities were suspended for the day.
At 9:45 a.m., the shelter-in-place order was lifted and the installation still retains an increased security posture.
No further information regarding the suspect is available at was available.
The incident remains under investigation.
