(BLOOMINGTON) - The Sigma Nu fraternity chapter at Indiana University was suspended Wednesday for rule violations related to hazing and alcohol.

The suspension of IU's Beta Eta chapter Wednesday marks the ninth Sigma Nu chapter to be suspended for hazing since 2012. The suspension will last at least three years.

Sigma Nu's national board of directors decided to suspend the chapter after a joint investigation with IU. The chapter was suspended because of violated policies set by IU and nationals regarding alcohol and hazing, according to the Sigma Nu national chapter.

All activities and events related to the chapter at 1015 N. Jordan Ave. must stop immediately, and all the current members are required to move out of the house by Oct. 22. Both IU and nationals have provided the brothers with on and off-campus living options.

This suspension is the result of repeated rule violations. The chapter was placed on disciplinary probation Jan. 20 for alcohol violations, endangering others and "failure to comply," according to IU's Division of Student Affairs website.

The chapter, which has had a chapter at IU for 125 years, was placed on deferred suspension on April 28 for the same reasons. It was suspended from social and new member activities on Sept. 12, but the website does not provide a reason.

Sigma Nu is the third fraternity to close or suspend a chapter at IU this year.

The Delta Tau Delta fraternity suspended its Beta Alpha chapter in January for repeated rule violations that included hazing. The Delta Delta Delta fraternity closed its Delta Omicron chapter in March, but officials would not provide a reason. Delta Delta Delta, or Tri Delta, refers to itself as a fraternity, even though its members are women, because the private organization's founding in 1888 predates the term sorority.
