(SALEM) - Salem is receiving a federal grant that will help bring much-needed repairs to the city’s wastewater treatment plant.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded Salem with a Community Development Block Grant of $550,000 to make improvements to the facility.
The treatment plant was severely damaged during a flash flood in May of this year, which hit Salem hard and lead to a state of emergency being declared for Washington County. In addition to the wastewater treatment plant, many homes and businesses were also devastated.
The repairs and improvements to the currently failing wastewater treatment plant could help reduce utility rates and protect the health of those living in our community. These infrastructure improvements will help enable long-term economic growth, as investments in rural communities like this not only benefit current residents, but can also attract more people and businesses to the area.
Through the grant program, more than $15 million in federal grant funding was awarded to 31 rural Indiana communities. These communities applied for grants in five programs including blight clearance programs, main street revitalization programs, public facilities programs, stormwater improvement programs and wastewater drinking water programs.
More grants will be available in the future. Interested communities will need to submit their proposals by Dec. 1, 2017. Final applications will be due Feb. 9, 2018. For more information, visit www.in.gov/ocra.
