Preparing the Family Caregiver

(UNDATED) - Caregivers of people living with dementia need to know these skills:

People living with dementia may need increasing help with day-to- day tasks as time goes on. Learn simple hands-on care skills with Barbara Haley, RN, from IU Health Bloomington Hospital at the next Caregiver University session from 10 a.m. - noon on Oct. 20, at the Monroe County Public Library.

The Alzheimer's Resource Service, a service of IU Health Community Health in Bloomington, in partnership with Purdue Extension of Monroe County, offers Caregiver University sessions at no cost. Register online at .

"We are here to support caregivers in our community," said Dayna Thompson, MS, LMHC of the Alzheimer's Resource Service. "Our topics are all chosen to help them through this journey and our team is dedicated to helping these people and their loved ones."

The last three Caregiver University sessions for 2017 in Monroe County will cover:

Hands-On Skills for the Family Caregiver | 10 a.m. - noon, Oct. 20
This session will enhance simple hands on care skills, including first-aid, how to help someone up from a fall, tips on transferring someone from sitting to standing, and other day-to- day tasks.

Enhancing Communication Within the Family | 1 - 3 p.m., Nov. 15
Sometimes providing support for your loved one is not the most stressful part of caregiving. Even the most motivated and well-meaning families have conflict at one time or another. Join us to build skill in increasing positive communication within the family.

Managing Holiday Stress | 10 - 11 a.m., Dec. 11
The holidays can be a stressful time; even more so when caregiving is part of the picture. Learning to take care of yourself is key during this hectic time of year. Join us to learn stress management techniques and to take some time for you.
