(BLOOMINGTON) - A Monroe County Sheriff civil process deputy shot and killed a pit bull after intervening in its attack on two dogs and the deputy.
Civil Process Deputy Brian Creech was serving court papers in Henderson Court Apartment complex, on Bloomington's south side when he heard a commotion, and checked on it, says Monroe County Sheriff Brad Swain.
Deputy Creech found a pit bull mauling a Chihuahua that was in the company of a woman walking it, and a second dog, a Schnauzer.
Deputy Creech used his issued pepper spray on the one-year-old male pit bull named "Chaos". The Pit bull stopped its attack on the smaller dog, but then attacked the Schnauzer, Sheriff Swain says.
Deputy Creech continued his attempt to stop the attack, during which the pit bull attempted to bite his wrist; but bit onto deputy Creech's wrist watch.
Deputy Creech then shot the dog one time, killing it.
Deputy Creech was directed to go to Monroe Hospital for examination of minor injury. Where he was treated and released and resumed his duty.
The woman who was walking the injured dogs took them to get medical care.
The Schnauzer has died from its injury. The Chihuahua was in surgery as of 2 p.m. today.
Bloomington Police and Animimal Management are investigating the attack.
Monroe County Sheriff's patrol division is investigating the officer involved discharging of a firearm event.
