Last updated on Tuesday, October 31, 2017

(BEDFORD) - A Mitchell man was arrested after he fought with Bedford Police officers and busted out the front glass doors of the Bedford Police Department.

Police arrested 54-year-old Timothy Handley on charges of intimidation, disorderly conduct, public intoxication and battery on a police officer.

According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, the incident began at 4:01 a.m. this morning when officers were called to IU Health Bedford Hospital.

Officers were called to the hospital after an emergency room employee reported a man was in the parking lot and refusing to give a patient her purse.

When police arrived they learned that Handley had transported his wife to the hospital for treatment and once there refused to allow her to have her purse.

"When officers arrived they found Handley locked inside of his vehicle in the parking lot," says Chief Parsley. "He was yelling obscenities and being uncooperative, refusing to give his wife her purse."

An officer approached the vehicle with a flashlight attempting to shine it into the vehicle when Handley cracked the window and grabbed the officer arm and flashlight.

"He refused to let the officer or the flashlight go," added Chief Parsley. "Other officer busted out the back window of the vehicle and had to forcibly remove Mr. Handley from the vehicle, with him fighting the whole time."

Officers were able to detain Handley and transport him to the Bedford Police Department.

"Once inside the department, Mr. Handley broke away from the officers, pushing the officer and himself into the glass doors busting it out."

During the struggle to detain Handley one officer was kicked in the knee and lower leg several times leaving bruises and another officer suffered several scraps.

"We were lucky no one was seriously injured," Chief Parsley says.
