Lawrence County Sheriff Mike Branham reported that there were 165 inmates in the Lawrence County Jail - of those 104 were males, 38 females and 21 Level 6 felons, there were 2+ Department of Correction holds.

Sheriff Branham says the painting and replacing of lighting in the cell blocks are complete.

Those improvements were major suggestions during the recent jail inspection. The jail inspector will be at the jail today to look at the improvements.

Repairs continue in the restrooms in the lower lobby of the jail. The bathrooms date back to 1989 and do not meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards. Repairs will be paid for with funds from the building repair budget.

Sheriff Branham says he has hired an engineer to help plan repairs to the front ramp at leads to the upper level on the outside of the jail and to address the issue of inmates flushing items down the toilets clogging the city's sewer lines.

The sheriff has tried numerous punishments to stop it from happening including putting the inmate in segregation, taking away commissary items and other punishment, but the practice continues.

The sheriff says other jail have installed a grinders in their sewer systems to address the problem.

"The blockage has occurred several times and many times blocks away from the jail," he added.
