Lawrence County's Unemployment Rate At 4.3 Percent

(BEDFORD) - Indiana's unemployment rate continued to be lower than the national rate in September, with a labor force of 3.34 million workers.

The state's rate stands at 3.8 percent while the national rate is 4.2 percent, according to the state's Department of Workforce Development report.

An estimated 126,395 people are currently unemployed and seeking employment in the state. The current labor force is at 3,342,602, and the number of employed people in Indiana is at 3,216,207.

Lawrence County's rate is above the national rate at 4.3 percent, ranking the 9th highest in the state.

Surrounding County's rank and rates:

  • 5th - Greene at 4.6 percent
  • 21st - Orange at 4 percent
  • 31st - Washington at 3.8 percent
  • 45th - Monroe at 3.5 percent
  • 63rd - Brown at 3.1 percent
  • 66th - Martin at 3.1 percent
  • 75th - Jackson at 3 percent
  • 83rd - Daviess at 2.8 percent
  • 90th - Dubois at 2.6 percent

The county with the highest unemployment rate was Vermillion County at 5.5 percent, the lowest was in Elkhart County at 2.5 percent.

Indiana's labor force had a net increase of 6,105 over the last month, which stemmed from 9,688 more people seeking employment, and a 3,583 decrease in the number of employed workers.

There was significant growth in the private sector. Employment increased by 8,200 workers over the past month, due to gains in areas including trade, transportation and utilities, as well as leisure and hospitality, according to the report.
