Fire Damages Bloomington Apartment Building

(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington Fire Department rescued three people and three cats from a burning apartment building on Thursday night.

Firefighters were called to the apartment building at 1610 South Dorchester Drive at 10:18 p.m.

When firefighters arrived they found three men on a third-floor balcony. One firefighter rushed inside and led the men through the smoke down two flights of stairs to safety. Firefighters also able to save three cats.

The fire started in the kitchen of a second story apartment. The fire and smoke had traveled up a vent and spread to three other units on the third floor, according to Bloomington Fire Department public information officer Sgt. Brandon Hudson.

Firefighters extinguished the flames and tore into the ceilings. walls and cabinetry of the kitchens and bathrooms of the apartments to extinguish any hot spots.

A lower-level apartment sustained water damage.

Firefighters were on the scene for three hours.

The cause of the kitchen fire remains under investigation.
