Dubois Ambulance Driver Cited, Woman Arrested After Accident

(DUBOIS CO.) - A St. Anythony woman was arrested and the driver of a Dubois County ambulance was cited after a crash at the Bretzville Junction, Thursday morning.

According to Dubois County police, 20-year-old Austin Hagan of Chrisney was driving the 2009 Chevrolet ambulance north on State Road 162 when he ran a red light at the intersection of State Road 64.

The ambulance was transporting a patient, but did not have its emergency sirens activated.

The ambulance struck a 2004 Lincoln Aviator driven by 23-year-old Riva Stenftenale of St. Anthony who was traveling west on State Road 64.

Police say the patient, 42-year-old William Luebbehusen of Ferdinand, who was not buckled in the back of the ambulance, suffered an abrasion to his face. He was transported from the scene in another ambulance.

Stenftenagel complained of head and neck pain. Her two children, ages 16-months and four-years-old were in safety seats in the back of the SUV. The younger child complained of neck pain. The four-year-old suffered a chest abrasion.

When police went to retrieve Stenftenagel's license and registration from her vehicle they found marijuana in the SUV.

She was transported to a local hospital for a blood-draw that showed she had presence of marijuana in her system.

Stenftenagel was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and possession of marijuana and booked into the Dubois County Jail.

Hagan was cited for disregarding a traffic signal.

Both vehicles were considered totaled.
