Change Of Venue Hearing Set In Daniel Messel Sexual Assault Case

Last updated on Thursday, October 12, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - A change of venue hearing has been set in the sexual assault case against Daniel Messel of Bloomington.

In August 2016, Messel was sentenced by Brown County Circuit Court Judge Judith Steward to 60 years for the murder of Indiana University student Hannah Wilson plus another 20 years for being a habitual offender. He is serving his sentence at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility.

The change of venue hearing is set for the morning of Jan. 5 in Monroe Circuit Court.

Last year, police charged Messel with abducting and sexually assaulting a 22-year-old Bloomington woman in 2012 after his DNA matched skin cells from beneath the victim's fingernails. Police say she was attacked near Griffy Lake by Messel who had offered her a ride home.

The woman contacted police during the murder trail saying the details of that case matched hers and she believed Messel was the same man that had attacked her.
