Boys And Girls Club Welcomed U.S. Representative Trey Hollingsworth

Last updated on Tuesday, October 10, 2017

(BEDFORD) - U.S. Representative Trey Hollingsworth visited the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence County yesterday afternoon.

"I think it was a good visit... He engaged with a lot of the teens at the Teen Center. They were doing money and financials [activities] with goal setting and talked a lot about his personal goal setting. He talked about career goal setting with the teens, which is really important," said Brigitte Gurden Chief Professional Officer of the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County.

Rep. Hollingsworth also observed an experiment in one of the activity rooms at the Limestone Unit where students were testing the densities of oil and water. He then told them the story of Archimedes and how he found the density of a golden crown.

"[King] asked Archimedes how can we figure out whether this is really gold or whether this is actually some other metal...then Archimedes realized that gold would have different density than other metals," Rep. Hollingsworth continued, "so, he figured out a way to test it in his bath tub...he ran through the streets in Athens naked from his bath tub screaming, 'Eureka! Eureka!' " And the room filled with giggles.

Rep. Hollingsworth toured the rest of Limestone Unit where he observed other after school activities asking questions about the programs, bullying and how the challenges that kids see at home have changed over time.

Gurden answered that last question with knowledge from her own experience. She said, "Coping skills. How do you deal with your anger isn't taught at home. How to do things isn't taught at home. Tying shoes. We teach kindergartners how to tie their own shoes because mom and dad never taught them. That's the biggest thing that I see and that we deal with."

Rep. Hollingsworth plans to visit other non-profits in the area before his return to D.C.
